Deerfield High School

Literary Festival
To expand the Literary Festival created and run successfully in 2009 to include a full day of workshops conducted by a wide range of writers and made available to all DHS students and potentially the community as well. Students hear from and get to ask questions of these writers in an open forum

Library Netbooks
To fund the purchase of netbook computers for the DHS library that can be used by students before, during, and after school.  Students can check out the netbooks allowing those who do not have computers or internet access at home the ability to take advantage of this technology outside of school.

Highland Park High School

Amnesty International - LINK Community Development
To set up and sustain a meaningful partnership with a school in Africa, enabling the students to enhance their knowledge about Africa and its people through direct contact.

Robotics Tech Challenge
 To support the development of a FTC Robotics Team.  Teams design, build and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.  Students apply real-world math & science concepts and develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills.  The goal is to inspire students to be science and technology leader.

TPI Camcorders
To fund the purchase of camcorders for the advanced English as a Second Language class and Technology Department.  The project is designed enable recent immigrant students to give voice to their experiences, share their stories in a long lasting format, and help them see the value of the hardships they have faced as they adjust to a new country and life.

HPHS3 – Soul, Salsa, Spirit
To fund the current and continually increasing demand for HP^3 programs which further the district’s racial equality goals.  This ongoing conversation about race, which includes minority & non-minority students, provides an opportunity for students and staff to talk about issues related to race in a safe environment.  All participants work towards building bridges across different cultures and races.

Music Technology for Band
To initiate a program that utilizes music technology for enhancing the musical growth and experience of students participating in the band program.  Students can practice exercises that have musical accompaniment or may perform traditional solos with musical accompaniment, and receive immediate assessment on the accuracy of notes and rhythms.

Literary Festival
To create a Literary Festival where poets and authors will host workshops that provide the opportunity for students to hear from professionals and learn ways in which they can put that knowledge to use.  This program follows the successful WERCS program funded in January 2008 by the Foundation. Local History Initiative
In cooperation with Deerfield Public Library, and in conjunction with Deerfield High School’s 50th anniversary, this program is designed to help students learn more about the school and town’s history through the collection of oral histories. ADL – Names Hurt Program
To help bring the Names Program, sponsored by the ADL, to Highland Park High School.  This assembly program is designed to provide a safe forum in which students can examine and share difficult issues and effect positive change in their own behavior and in their school communities, while teaching respect for differences.  The goal is to create a common language and experience and continue conversations about Equity and Excellence in the school.  (Post grant evaluation (HTML)   (PDF)

English Plus Reading

HPHS3 – Soul, Salsa, Spirit

Furniture for the Support Group Room

Post Prom Committee
Funding for an all-night, substance free event designed to insure the safety and well being of students on prom night.  The party is to be held at DHS beginning at midnight and run until 5:00 am.  Function is open to all DHS seniors, whether or not they attend the prom, and includes prom dates.  The evening will include games, sports, dancing, food, raffle prizes and entertainment.  DHS seniors will be included in the planning of the event.

One Book, One Zip Code Program
Funding to help create a “One Book” program for the Deerfield High School attendance area.  One title is to be selected that all community members are encouraged to read, discuss, and participate in activities together.  The goals of the program are to build community, promote a love of literature, and provide opportunities for multigenerational interaction. Outdoor Display Case:AP Environmental Sciences &
 The Education Life Skills Program's Prairie Garden

Funds to purchase a display case for the joint Prairie Garden projects between the AP Environmental Sciences students and students in the Education and Life Skills classes.  By displaying these joint projects to community members who visit the prairie gardens they will help educate the community about how prairies function, and why endangered prairie plants should be saved from extinction.

To supplement funding for North Suburban Special Education District (NSSED) initiative to cook meals for homeless women in PADS Transition Housing. These special needs students manage all aspects of budgeting, shopping, and meal preparation, which teaches them life skills in addition to providing a service to community members in need. Redesign & Transform the Student Courtyard
To help fund the efforts of multiple groups of students to redesign and rebuild the cafeteria courtyard into a learning and recreation space for students and faculty.  Students will learn about the dynamics of community action and collaboration, problem solving and “green design” in the geometry and environmental science classes, and concepts of area and similarity for designing the ground coverage of the courtyard space using CAD programming in the architecture computer lab.
